Three ways to get a bot
- A bot builder. Quick for menus and FAQ answers. You pay a monthly fee and live within what the builder can do.
- Write it yourself. Free if you can program: register the bot in BotFather, write the logic in Python or Node.js and run it on a server.
- Hire a developer. The bot is built around your process — with your database, payments and integrations — and the code stays with you. A simple bot from me starts at $200.
Step 1: register the bot in BotFather
Every Telegram bot starts the same way, whichever path you choose:
- Open @BotFather in Telegram — it is Telegram's official bot for creating bots.
- Send
/newbot, choose a display name and a username that ends in “bot”, for examplecafe_orders_bot. - BotFather replies with a token — the key your code uses to control the bot.
- Set the description, profile picture and the command menu with
/setdescription,/setuserpicand/setcommands.
Keep the token secret: whoever has it controls the bot. If it leaks, open /mybots, choose the bot and revoke the token to get a new one.
Step 2: write the bot's logic
Bots are usually written in Python (libraries such as aiogram or python-telegram-bot) or Node.js (grammY, Telegraf). A minimal bot that greets users looks like this:
import asyncio
from aiogram import Bot, Dispatcher
from aiogram.filters import CommandStart
bot = Bot('YOUR_TOKEN')
dp = Dispatcher()
@dp.message(CommandStart())
async def start(message):
await message.answer('Hi! How can I help?')
asyncio.run(dp.start_polling(bot))A real business bot is much more than this: dialogue scenarios, a database, error handling, notifications and an admin panel. The bot receives messages either by asking Telegram for updates (long polling) or through a webhook — an HTTPS address Telegram calls for every new message.
Step 3: run it on a server
A bot is a program that has to run around the clock. The usual choice is a small cloud server for $5–10 a month. Free hosting plans tend to put the bot to sleep, so a customer writes and waits. For webhooks you also need a domain with HTTPS. Costs are compared in does a Telegram bot cost money to run.
What a business bot usually needs
- Dialogue scenarios — order, booking, question, cancellation; each tested separately.
- A database for orders, bookings and customers.
- Notifications to your team in a Telegram group.
- An admin panel or a Google Sheet to change products and prices without a programmer.
- Payments through a payment provider if customers pay in the bot.
- Languages — for example Uzbek, Russian and English with a choice at the start.
Builders handle the first point well. Everything after it is where custom code starts to pay off.
When a bot builder is enough
A builder makes sense when the bot is a menu with answers, you want to test an idea this week, and you are fine with a monthly fee. Watch three things: the monthly price grows with users or features, your data lives on the builder's platform, and moving away means rebuilding the bot from scratch.
Which way to choose
| Your situation | Best option |
|---|---|
| Menu and answers to common questions | A builder or a simple custom bot from $200 |
| Orders or bookings with your own data | A custom bot, around $350 |
| Payments, admin panel, Telegram and WhatsApp | A custom bot, from $600 |
| A full interface with catalog, accounts or booking | A Mini App, from $1,500 |
| You are a programmer yourself | Write it yourself: the Telegram Bot API is free and well documented |
Common mistakes to avoid
- The token in a public repository. Anyone who finds it controls your bot.
- No backups. Orders and customers live in the database — back it up automatically.
- No restart after a crash. The bot should come back by itself after an error or a server reboot.
- Unwanted messages. Writing to people who did not ask gets the bot blocked; Telegram also limits how fast bots can send.
- Accounts in the developer's name. The bot, server and domain should be registered to you from day one.
Questions
Can I create a Telegram bot for free?
Yes. Registering a bot in BotFather and using the Telegram Bot API cost nothing. You only pay for the server it runs on or for a builder subscription.
Do I need to know Python?
Only if you write the bot yourself. Builders need no code, and with a developer the code is their job.
Can I create a bot from my phone?
You can register it in BotFather from your phone. Writing and running the code needs a computer and a server, or a builder.
Where do I get the bot token?
From @BotFather: it sends the token after /newbot. You can see or revoke it later in /mybots → your bot → API Token.
How long does a business bot take?
A simple bot takes 3–5 days, one with orders or bookings 5–8 days, and one with payments and an admin panel 8–14 days.
Can a Telegram bot accept payments?
Yes — through payment providers connected to Telegram, and digital goods through Telegram Stars. The details are in the article about Telegram shops.
